Acuva products are NSF certified!
In honor of the recent release of NSF / ANSI 55-2019 by NSF International, we are sharing what these certification standards are about! Our own Dr Ashkan Babaie, Director of Advanced Engineering, was a key member of the International Working Group in developing the 2019 version of the NSF / ANSI 55 standard, which now includes test protocols for systems using alternative UVC sources such as LEDs in addition to traditional mercury UV lamps.
But what does it really mean to be NSF / ANSI 55 certified and why is it important?
Clean, safe water is free of microbial contaminants. To achieve this level of purity, our products undergo extensive in-house testing by our engineers and scientists. Upon completion of our testing, our products are certified to NSF / ANSI 55 standards by certifiers accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
Which Acuva products have NSF / ANSI 55?
Acuva's Eco NX-Silver is currently the only LED-based product worldwide that features NSF / ANSI 55-Class B for microbial performance, as well as material safety and structural integrity in accordance with NSF / ANSI 55-2019. Previously, Acuva Eco 1.5 was also the first product to contain NSF / ANSI 55-Class B according to NSF / ANSI-2018. In addition, our Strike modules for OEMs have been NSF / ANSI 55 for material safety and structural integrity as of June 2019.
What is NSF / ANSI 55?
NSF / ANSI 55 tests UV water treatment equipment against 3 key criteria:
1. Microbial disinfection performance: Validate the effectiveness of microbial disinfection by identifying system performance as Class A or Class B
2. Material Safety for Drinking Water: Ensure that the material used in the UV water purifier does not leach heavy metals or other contaminants that are known to be hazardous to human health
3. Structural integrity: ensure the UV water purifier can retain hydraulic pressures under sudden pressure jumps or continuous pressure cycles occurring in the plumbing system under regular use.
What's new in the 2019 version of the NSF / ANSI 55?
The 2019 version of the standard is different only in terms of testing protocols for Microbial Disinfection Performance (No. 1) and has not changed in terms of Material Safety and Structural Integrity (No. 2 and No. 3). In terms of disinfection performance, test protocols for LED-based systems are now included and microbial performance assessment has moved from a dose-based assessment to a log reduction basis.
What is the difference between standard and certification?
NSF International is an independent non-profit organization that develops safety standards, including NSF/ANSI 55 for the protection of public health. When it comes to certification against the NSF Standards, there are approximately 6 accredited certifiers in North America, such as IAPMO, WQA, NSF, CSA, that provide certification to public domain NSF / ANSI standards. Each accredited certifier provides equivalent compliance to regulations and equivalent product assurance and acceptance to buyers. Acuva currently performs product certification to NSF / ANSI 55 and NSF / ANSI 372 standards with IAPMO.
